How we help

Communities

Communities are our strongest alliance

In short, partnership with communities is why we do what we do. The foundation of empowerment and leadership in a community is how we envision sustainable growth in rural Honduras. To be able to foster this successful growth, SELF chooses community partners carefully. This way, we can ensure effective and lasting results with our projects. An appropriate community to work with SELF is motivated, eager and willing to work. None of our projects are a gift, and we can only create sustainable results with teamwork.

Nuevo Paraíso

Built around an orphanage and single mother’s project, Nuevo Paraíso is a community with a lot of heart. Nuevo Paraíso is home to several of our staff members, including our in-country director Moises Vallecillo. We have initiated and completed several projects in this community, including our first Clean Water Team pilot project with a 13,000 gallon water tank providing clean water for more than 1500 local villagers and students. Building Hope Program has also completed its pilot project with the high school clinic in this community.

Nueva Esperanza

The neighboring village to Nuevo Paraíso, Nueva Esperanza is much larger and not without its own challenges. We chose Nueva Esperanza as our pilot village for the first Community Youth Microenterprise project because of the population of eager and motivated students living there. In cooperation with international volunteers, Building Hope painted the local school while the Dental Team has provided education and fluoride treatments for young students.

Pacayas

Nestled in the mountains, Pacayas is a hidden community of 63 families which takes a trek of nearly 60 kilometers to get to from the SELF offices. Hard-working and eager to collaborate, Pacayas villagers have partnered with SELF on several projects including multiple health and dental collaboratives, a Clean Water Project in cooperation with Rotary International, and the recent initiation of a new Youth Council through the Community Youth Microenterprise Program.

El Bosque

Just over 42 km North-East of Honduras’ capital city Tegucigalpa, is the village of El Bosque. El Bosque “The Forest”, is the smaller neighbor to Pacayas with 45 families. Like Pacayas, El Bosque is also full of welcoming community leaders that are excited to collaborate. Over the last several years, SELF has worked with villagers as a team for multiple health and dental collaboratives, a Clean Water Project with the cooperation of Rotary International, and the recent establishment of a Youth Council with the Community Youth Microenterprise Program.

Villa Nueva

Full of boisterous community members, Villa Nueva is a village within the municipality of Morocelí, located near the department borders of El Paraíso and Francisco Morazán and along one of the main roads between Tegucigalpa and Danlí. Villa Nueva community members have partnered with SELF for multiple health and dental collaboratives, as well as a huge Clean Water Team project, in collaboration with Rotary International, that is an important first for the community. Village leaders from Villa Nueva are very invested in the future of their community, always ready to work, and have been very active with SELF viveros and reforestation campaigns.
